Geronimo
In the heat of the south of France, Geronimo dedicates her life to the young people of a problematic district after having gone through a difficult adolescence. The fragile balance of this community is torn when Nil Terzi, of Turkish origin, escapes her forced marriage to be with the man she loves, Lucky Molina, whose family is Roma. When the two clans prepare to fight out their differences, Geronimo tries to calm everyone down…
A director of free spirits, Tony Gatlif sets his camera down in the middle of young people tainted by violence and tradition. The premise is very familiar, but the eye of the director of Gadjo Dilo offers a striking perspective on a world usually ignored. One has only to see the stunning dance battles, both beautiful and impressive, to understand that Geronimo is unusually powerful, reminiscent of Romain Duris’ trance scene in Exils. The film offers stunning direction that provides pure cinematic moments, such as the escape of the two female protagonists into wild reeds. With her incredibly blue eyes, Céline Sallette adds a beautiful intensity to the movie, despite a script that gets a little out of control at the end, abandoning its initial, beautiful mystery.
