Mr. Kaplan
Montevideo, Uruguay. Jacob Kaplan is 76 and has the feeling he has missed out on life. Fleeing the Nazis in the 1930s and leaving behind his Jewish family, he goes to South America to start a new life with his wife Rebecca and their two sons. When he finds out that the owner of a bar at the beach may be a former Nazi, Jacob decides to kidnap him and take him to Israel for trial. He is helped by Wilson Contreras, a former policeman turned chauffeur who has been hired by Jacob’s family to look after him …
Mr. Kaplan is moving from the outset thanks to the face of the troubled old man who, in the winter of his life, decides to live his life carelessly and full speed ahead. Reflected by this sensitive and miserable man played by Hector Noguera, the bittersweet film offers laughter and tears. It marks the return of Alvaro Brechner six years after Bad Day to go Fishing, which introduced the Uruguayan director at Cannes during the Director’s Fortnight. His curious character Jacob Kaplan is in the end effect the best thing about this otherwise ordinary movie, whose screenplay is somewhat simplistic and not really interesting beyond its initial premise. Nonetheless, Brechner has the good idea of giving his film a final note that is more beautiful and surprising than expected.
