Son épouse

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A French widower goes to India to meet the Tamil woman who claims to be inhabited by his wife.

Joseph and Catherine are so tormented by his desire for a child they end up separating. She disappears and he’s left alone. Then he finds out Catherine has drowned near Chennai, India. Joseph flies there and meets Gracie, a young Tamil woman who has just married and claims that Catherine’s spirit has taken over her body. Although skeptical, he decides to do everything he can to reach out to Catherine...

Et après, the curious reincarnation story starring Romain Duris and John Malkovich, proved that Michel Spinosa is not your generic director. Along the same lines, Son épouse is both intoxicating and disconcerting. Using flashbacks and culture shock, it’s a story of symbolic phantoms incarnated by Indian folklore that offers some beautifully unexpected moments. It is intriguing but generally awkward – at least it also proves that Charlotte Gainsbourg is a fascinating actor, even though her latest film choices have been somewhat odd, as evidenced by Nymphomaniac and Jacky au royaume des filles.
