Beyond My Grandfather Allende
Marcia Tambutti Allende wants to break the silence surrounding her family’s tragic past, 35 years after the coup d'état that deposed her grandfather Salvador Allende, the first democratically elected socialist president who committed suicide when Pinochet usurped him in 1973. She believes it is time to dig up the memories of her family’s daily lives, the images that were taken from them as they were exiled. Allende offers an honest portrait, without grandiloquence, taking into account the complexity of irreparable loss and the role of memory within three generations of a wounded family.
Using a camera to break taboos and lift the weight of several decades, Marcia Tambutti Allende mixes an intimate family portrait with history in this reserved and touching documentary, which reopens wounds to shed light on the memories of her grandfather, in an attempt to replace horror and trauma with joy and nostalgia. Beyond My Grandfather Allende is a remarkable work that offers a close look at one of the great figures of South American history.
