Araf - Somewhere in Between
There's not much romance involved: in her fifth film, Yesim Ustaoglu investigates the lives of Turkish women.
Teenagers Zehra and Olgun work in a freeway service area between Istanbul and Ankara. Zehra is in love with Olgun, but she meanwhile dreams more about getting out and seeing the world than becoming someone's submissive wife. At a wedding, Zehra meets a mysterious traveler and her life veers towards disaster: she sleeps with him, fervently waits for him to return and finally has a miscarriage in a hospital bathroom.
In her fifth feature film, Turkish director Yesim Ustaoglu shows how the dreams of young people are doomed to fail, with the internet, TV and the local shopping center raising their hopes unnaturally high. Her film also deals with the predestined lot of Turkish women. There's not much romance and there's no big happy end.
