How the internet has insinuated itself into our lives, causing serious damage...
Video sex worker Kyle meets Nina – a journalist interested in social conditions – in a chat room. College students Jason and Frye harass Ben, a young man already bullied by others. By pretending to be a woman on a social network, they trick him into sending them a compromising photo, which they publish on the internet. Cindy and Derek have just lost their baby; Cindy seeks comfort in chat rooms with people going through similar experiences. When their bank account is robbed via internet, they hire a detective (Jason's father Mike), who puts them on the trail of the perpetrator. The three stories continuously intersect as they come to a common conclusion.
Who among us is able to resist being “connected” these days? Whether for work, for sharing experiences, entertainment, living out fantasies, wanting to please or belong to a social group that mainly defines itself by appearances... With suspense and brio but without getting too preachy, Henry Alex Rubin deconstructs the mechanisms leading to today's pressures. What if the need for connection ended up making us more alone, instead of less?
