The Look of Love
Biopic by Michael Winterbottom about Paul Raymond, who opened the first strip club in prude 1950s England.
"King of Soho Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan) opens the UK's first strip club in 1958, laying the cornerstone for an unequaled career. In the early 70s, he adds several porn magazines to his empire, as well as a large swath of London real estate, turning him into an extremely rich man. After three decades, he hands the reigns over to his daughter Debbie (Imogen Poots), ignoring the fact that she is addicted to heroin and battling serious psychological problems.
Michael Winterbottoms magnificently adorned trip through England in the second half of the 20th century is visually stunning and musically rich. In his usual professional style, Winterbottom moves from the Swinging Sixties to Cool Britannia, covering all the biographical highlights of his main character, Paul Raymond (Steve Coogan). The movie's depth comes mainly from its multilayered women, but in the end effect not even they can compensate for the trivial screenplay by Matt Greenhalgh (Nowhere Boy*), which mainly offers drama with no drama.
