The Look of Silence
Indonesia. Adi Rukun is an itinerant eye doctor. During his travels, he investigates the death of his older brother, who was accused of “communism” and killed during the massacres of 1965-66. Joshua Oppenheimer follows Rukun as he confronts the assassins, waging a battle against silence and the fear that still reigns in the country.
The Look of Silence is a stunning film. Incredibly strong, overwhelmingly dignified and necessarily violent, this film by Joshua Oppenheimer reopens the old wounds of a country ravaged by silence, as it refuses to even discuss the million people killed by anti-communists. Oppenheimer returns to the subject of his 2012 film The Act of Killing, this time giving voice to the victims in the form of a man determined to meet those who killed his brother in front of his mother. These icy encounters clearly demonstrate Indonesia’s attitude towards its past, making The Look of Silence an important work, beautiful and horrific – a must-see.
