"Billy Elliot" is not just the story about a little boy who successfully fights the prejudices of his family and the surrounding community, but also a study of English working-class life in the 80s. Director Stephen Daldry embraces a bleakly realistic style, livened up by finest British humour. None of his characters are in for a beauty contest: they struggle with unemployment, frustration, alcohol problems and bottled up emotions.
