When the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius dies, power struggles erupt in Rome. General Maximus is Marcus Aurelius’ designated successor but his son Commodus has aspirations of his own. Commodus murders the general’s family and Maximus is forced to flee the country. He ends up being sold as a slave but later on he is chosen to become a gladiator. He decides that fighting in the arena is the only way he can return to Rome and take revenge on Commodus.
