In the 1940s, Carl Brashear (Cuba Gooding Jr.) wants to make a career in the US Navy. Because he is Black he has to overcome an extra number of obstacles. Training officer Billy Sunday (Robert de Niro) is determined to see him fail training. But Carl is not to be deterred and completes training successfully. After a collision with a Russian submarine he is declared unfit for underwater duties and his hopes to become chief master seem to be crushed for ever. With the help of his former enemy Sunday, he tries to achieve the impossible: return into service.
