George Jung (Johnny Depp) leaves suburban America in the late sixties for the beaches of L.A., enjoys the 'Summer of Love' and soon becomes involved in the very lucrative marijuana trade. During his first stint in prison, he makes contacts within the Columbian Medellin cartel. Once out, he becomes the exclusive middleman to the U.S. for the coke trade and marries a Columbian (Penelope Cruz). His business makes him a billionaire, but he soon gets caught up in various intrigues and, under the influence of drugs, increasingly loses his sense of reality as the F.B.I. starts breathing down his neck.
