An average north-Italian family - formed by Giovanni, father and psychoanalyst, Paola, mother and editor of art catalogues and their two adolescent children, Andrea and Irene - is thrown into disarray by the death of Andrea. The film traces how the family struggles to come to terms with the tragedy and the great pain. They have to get used to the thought that the loved one is gone forever, they experience feelings of guilt and isolation because of the difficulty to communicate.
