Bobby Garfield returns to his small hometown in Connecticut, to attend the funeral of a childhood friend. Here he is reminded of the summer he was 11 in 1960, and of the meeting that would change his life. Living with his mother, little Bobby meets the new upstairs tenant, a cultivated and enigmatic man in his sixties named Ted Brautigan. They become such good friends during the course of the summer that the mysterious neighbor teaches Bobby his supernatural powers and makes him part of his troubled past.
