Lila (Patricia Arquette), specialist in natural sciences, has returned an urban lifestyle and befriends a complex and obsessive man called Nathan (Tim Robbins). When one day both of them discover Puff, an uncultured young man, born and raised at the rough end of life, Nathan decides it is his mission to inculcate Puff with the rudiments of "civilised" society in an attempt to transform him into a model of elegance and good education. Lila on the other hand is keen to preserve his "animal" quality and pureness of soul, a symbol of his freedom from a bourgeois society.
