After the accidental death of her husband, the doctor Antonia discovers that during their marriage he had had a long-term lover. She gets to know this man, Michele, who has gathered a circle of men and women around him who don't exactly make up Rome's favored few. A friend who is dying of AIDS lives with him; the Turkish neighbor - as the audience learns incidentally - was mistreated by the police in her homeland; the people back in Veronica's village have no idea that the young man has meanwhile become a beautiful woman. Slowly but surely, Antonia and Michele come closer to one another, and in Michele's friends Antonia finds - as did her husband before her - a new family.
