The story of the Redlich family belies the exceptional cruelty of war: having fled from the Nazis, the Redlichs find themselves fighting for their existence in Kenya. Whilst the mother finds it difficult to cope in a far-off foreign land, her shy daughter, Regina, positively blossoming. A Kenyan cook helps Regina settle in to her adopted country, teaching her his native tongue. The war in Europe, however, soon overtakes the family when the British colonial government interns the family.
