Jonathan and Sara stumble in the pre-Christmas New York shopping scrum on the last pair of black gloves and end up spending a magical evening together. Sara refuses to exchange telephone numbers on that evening as both are romantically involved. Instead she contrives to circulate their respective numbers: his on the back of a bank note and hers inserted in an antique book. If Jonathan is meant to be, Sara believes their paths will surely cross again, and promptly disappears. A few years later Sara and Jonathan begin a frantic search for each other.
