Mentally challenged Beatles fan Sam (Sean Penn) becomes a single father. As a grown man with the mentality of a seven year-old, the obstacles in his way are enormous. So too thinks the state, which takes sweet, smart, little Lucy (Dakota Fanning) away from him. Sam, with the help of the overzealous and bitter lawyer Rita Harrison (Michelle Pfeiffer) goes to court to get her back.
