The illustrious professor of history and specialist of religious symbology, Robert Langdon, is contacted by a representative of the Vatican City to help this tiny state find out why it has been hit by a series of tragedies: although the death of the last pope seems to have been natural, four cardinals possible successors to the office have been kidnapped by a minion of the Illuminati. This centuries-old sect, which included the astronomer Galileo and the Renaissance painter Raphael among its members, has always been against the Catholic church, contesting the existence of God and advancing scientific and Cartesian theories.
