Charlie St. Cloud is a young man about to leave his Pacific Northwest home to attend Stanford University on a sailing scholarship. But when his little brother Sam dies in a car accident he feels responsible for, Charlie's grief overwhelms him. He takes a job as the caretaker at the cemetery where Sam is buried - and where Charlie teaches Sam's ghost to play baseball, promising him he will never leave. Then Charlie meets Tess, a young woman about to sail around the world. As they begin to fall in love, Charlie finds himself caught between his promise to Sam's ghost and the possibility of a real life.
