1993: a community of Cistercian-Trappist monks live in a remote village in the Algerian countryside, where for a long time they have lived in their monastery in harmony with the Muslim villagers, who are tended by the monk in charge of the infirmary. But over the years innocent locals increasingly become victims of the civil war, and eventually the monks themselves are threatened by the Islamic extremists, to the point where they have to decide whether to go, or stay and support the villagers, putting their own lives in danger...
