Agathe (*Isabelle Huppert*), director of the Fondation d'Art Contemporain Cartier in Paris, and Patrick (*Benoît Poelvoorde*), an impecunious Walloon factory worker, have only one thing in common: their sons go to the same school and are good friends. She is just as cold and uptight as he is coarse and clumsy. When Agathe's boyfriend (*André Dussolier*) hires Patrick to finish some construction work on their sumptuous apartment, his boorish presence gets on her sniffy nerves. But one separation and a few glasses too many soon put things in a different light...
