The King's Speech
With WWII approaching, a self-styled nonconformist speech therapist helps the Duke of York overcome his stutter.
Charged by his father, George V of Britain, to give a speech on the newly invented radio, the Duke of York (the father of Elizabeth II) stutters his way through it unsuccessfully. After this fiasco, his loving wife decides to find a specialist to help him with his stammer. A few are consulted, tried out and found wanting, and finally the choice rests with a failed Shakespearean actor turned speech therapist with a shabby practice, who insists on treating this elite member of the royal family as an equal, going so far as to call him "Bertie"...
History seen through a microscope trained on two men; a treatise on confidence-building and the attempt at the abolition of the social classes, against a backdrop of the impending 2nd World War and the dismantling of the Great British Empire. A period piece evidently constructed to send Colin Firth to the Oscars, The King's Speech is nevertheless a great movie that renders its viewers moved, happy and – speechless!
