The Way Back
During WWII, a group of men escape from a Siberian gulag.
In 1940, a group of men from different countries escape from one of Stalin's camps. Unable to cross Russia to the west, they take off on a journey over 10,000 km, across first Siberia, then Mongolia, the Gobi Desert, Tibet and finally the Himalayas to reach British India. This incredibly difficult journey will cost some their lives while others will give up on their own. But for all of them, an instinctive drive will allow them to put one foot in front of the other for weeks on end, surmounting inconceivable physical conditions.
Peter Weir, the maker of the excellent Master and Commander and The Truman Show, directs a film that's sure to be a classic, based - unbelievably - on real events. While the characters remain relatively distant, the landscape they struggle through is breathtaking.
