A Late Quartet
An anniversary crisis: a string quartet made up of three men and a woman fights to survive after 25 years together.
The members of a string quartet, made up of three men and a woman, have been playing together for more than two decades. But when they start rehearsing for their anniversary concert, cracks begin to appear in their musical, instrumental and interpersonal foundation, which until now has been solid. A challenge in many ways for the aging group, which comes up against all kinds of issues, with unexpected results in every case.
Yaron Zilberman is fearless. Among insiders, string quartets are known to come with a dynamic that is both interesting and difficult, and they are low in marketability in a segment of the music industry that is in itself very small. The director is therefore commendable in taking on a usually elitist subject matter and packaging it for the masses. But the way the actors obviously play at being masters of extremely difficult instruments - even though it's clear even to the uninitiated that they're not - ends up delivering a sense that something is off - right down to the acoustics.
