The friendship between two mischievous little girls soon turns their families' respective lives upside down.

The only child of Jewish parents, Rachel suffers from the weight of the unsaid and from the little comments that her mother (Agnès Jaoui) seems to think up by the dozen. The girl is dying of boredom and dreams of exchanging her status for that of orphan, which seems preferable. Her trips to a child psychiatrist don't change anything. Luckily she meets Valérie, a mischievous and cheeky girl, affected by a heart defect, which she also has on her hand. When Rachel's father (Denis Podalydès), who installs kitchens, offers a new one to Valérie's single mother (Isabelle Carré), Rachel's parents, far from quietly growing old, see their world turned upside down...

Carine Tardieu returns to the colorful 80's for a story about a charming family, and although she is often too generous with clichés, the strength of the film lies in its clever dialogue. Its tone is reminiscent of social comedies where serious subjects are treated in an off-handed way only to turn dark in the end, leaving a somewhat bitter taste in the audience's mouth.
