Florence Foster Jenkins
New York, 1944. Heiress Florence Foster Jenkins is passionate about classical music. With the help of her husband and impresario, the failed actor St Clair Bayfield, she organizes many social events and sings in her spare time. The only problem: she has a horrible singing voice. But because she is sheltered by those around her, including her husband, she has no idea – and decides to hold concerts and perform for an audience...
Just months after Xavier Giannoli’s “Marguerite, which earned Catherine Frot the César for Best Actress, it’s the turn of Stephen Fears (The Queen) and Meryl Streep* to tell the incredible story of Florence Foster Jenkins. Calibrated to amuse, move and draw the viewer in, the film works like a well-oiled machine. Too well-oiled to really captivate, despite some interesting notes and undeniable skill. Instead of causing cinematic sparks, this collaboration between the unsurpassable Meryl Streep and the prestigious Stephen Frears is content to offer a decent, bittersweet comedy. It will fully satisfy fans of the actress and offers a new perspective (more correct from a historical point of view) on this unclassifiable anti-heroine.
