The Intern

Movie Rating: Geoffrey Crété

A 70-year-old widower, Ben Whittaker is bored with his daily life. Then he sees an ad for senior interns at an online fashion start-up. So he sends in an application and is hired to assist Jules Ostin, the complicated founder and CEO of the business, who shows him a whole new world...

First there was The Internship, starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn as “old” interns working at Google and confronted by millennials who made them look like dinosaurs. Now a real dinosaur, Robert De Niro, is thrown into a cool start-up headed by Anne Hathaway, in yet another silly comedy. The Intern is really, really dumb, with nothing of interest to show or tell. Made completely by consensus, with bottom-drawer jokes, this superficial bit of entertainment seems only to exist to fund new swimming pools for its over-qualified stars. Yet another unnecessary movie from Nancy Meyers, whose benchmark at least used to be a bit higher (What Women Want, The Holiday).
