Grandmother France, Philippines 2009 – 110min.

Lola
Two Philippina grandmothers are drawn to Manila by a murder.
Lola Sepa desperately needs money to bury her murdered grandson. She wanders all over Manila in the pouring rain trying to find some, while Lola Puring brings her own grandson, who is the murder suspect, food in prison and wishes she had the money to pay his bail.
Both melodramatic and sober, with quiet humor here and there, Philippino director Brillante Mendoza's latest project is an unsentimental ode to two strong old women. His handheld camera is reminiscent of Dogma movies and the close camera work invokes Belgian directors Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne ("Rosetta", "Le fils").
