Four people seek happiness in Bombay, without necessarily finding it.
The seductive photographer Shai (Monica Dogra), born to Indian parents but educated in the United States, goes to a gallery opening in Bombay and meets the painter Arun (Aamir Khan, the famous Indian actor) with whom she spends the night. Her laundry man Munna (Prateik), whom she has befriended, dreams of becoming an actor, so she takes his head shots to help him in his career. In exchange, he shows her the seamier side of the city. Meanwhile, Arun, who has moved to a new apartment, finds three video cassettes made by the former tenant, a young woman who moves him deeply...
This debut by Aamir Khan's wife Kiran Rao is a vibrant portrait of Bombay, a sprawling city with 14 million inhabitants. The eyes of the painter, the photographer and the amateur video filmmaker capture intense moments across the prism of their characters. Each one is caught in their own universe. It becomes clear between the lines that the weakest individuals (a woman abused by her husband, a man at the bottom of the social scale) have no hope of personal achievement.
