A boy who's lost his mother has to deal with a father who's overwhelmed by the situation.

10-year-old Christian and his 40-someting father Claus have just buried his mother and moved in with his grandmother. He makes friends with a boy at his new school named Elias, who gets teased and bullied. Christian refuses to sit by and watch, especially when Elias' father is threatened and won’t stick up for himself. So Christian seeks revenge for them, but his own father is overwhelmed by the situation.

Susanne Bier again focuses on contrasts with Europe, with an important part of the story taking place far in Africa and great emphasis placed on opposites. Nominated for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year by the Oscar committee.
