La dernière fugue
Cut down by illness, a hateful old man suffers through what remains of his life. The child he hates most gives him back his dignity.
It’s Christmas, and the young and old surrounding Anatole, the family patriarch, are full of the season’s happiness. But Anatole has Parkinson’s and does his best to ruin the mood by forcing everyone to watch “his” TV shows, sniping at the children and complaining about the food and desserts. After arguing with his brothers about how to save their mother from this burden, the oldest son – who hates their father the most – decides together with his nephew to help the old man die in peace...
A strong emotional film by Léa Pool (Maman est chez le coiffeur), who again focuses on the dysfunctional family. Is it necessary to put an old man through humiliating physical therapy? Thanks to Pool’s sensitivity and sense of humor, the melodrama never becomes overpowering as she takes death head-on.
