Germain is an unskilled laborer and borderline illiterate, consistently blocked by both his meager intelligence and his nagging mother. This changes when he meets an older woman on a park bench. She teaches him to love the world's great literature and gain a passion for reading. When she's sent off to a cheap old folk's home by her uncaring son, Germain springs into action.

Jean Beckers tragicomedy is a rustic melodrama with sensitive shades, in which France's hunk of a legend Gérard Dépardieu stars alongside Gisèle Casadesus (born in 1914), one of its grande dames. Unspectacular and elegant: Becker has conjured up an independent film jewel crafted with silent glances and subtle, a rare cinematic amour fou.
