Le quattro volte
An innovative movie about rural life in a Calabrian village.
A shepherd takes his flock to pasture, where he dies in his frugal hut. A wobbly newborn kid attempts to walk on all four hoofs for the first time. A tree is cut down and the villagers assemble around it. They make coal from its wood for the fires in the village. People, animals, plants and minerals make up the Quattro volte (The Four Times) of Italian director Michelangelo Frammartino's film.
Slow, poetic and with no dialog, this innovative film invites audiences to contemplate a world both faraway and familiar: old, fragile, simple and rich in the fundamental vital energy that unites man with his natural surroundings.
