Patricio Guzmán's documentary is a memorial to Pinochet's torture victims.
Astronomy and archeology are related according to Patricio Guzmán, in his moving documentary about how Chile is dealing with its past. While astronomers look out into the history of the stars from their observatory in the Atacama Desert, desperate old women attempt to find the remains of their sons, brothers, and spouses who were kidnapped, tortured and killed during the military dictatorship.
Patricio Guzmán lets both sides talk and shows beautiful images of the desert and an old, restored observatory. For six years, Guzmán worked on this film about the very individual, destructive consequences of Pinochet's dictatorship, in which – similar to the one in Argentina – thousands were tortured, maimed and disappeared.
