A submissive woman takes over the family business run by her tyrannical husband.

The French province, 1970’s: the powerful haute bourgeois Pujol family inherits an umbrella factory. Managing the business with an iron fist, the patriarch Robert Pujol treats with contempt and hostility all those he considers his inferiors, in other words, his employees, his children and his wife, the docile Suzanne. His attitude comes back to bite him, however, when his workers decide to strike in the face of his spitefulness and he’s forced to hide. Against all expectations, Robert owes his eventual freedom to the diplomatic efforts of his wife Suzanne. After pulling off that coup, Suzanne becomes the perfect replacement for her husband at the head of the firm, in the eyes of everyone involved, especially since her husband also is subject to heart problems. But the nasty Robert is unwilling to give up just yet...

Stuffed with clichés and unbridled silliness, François Ozon’s latest exercise in style is convincing in its simple but efficient humor and its soft naïveté, with a happy and colorful atmosphere. Starring a trio of French legends: Catherine Deneuve, Gérard Depardieu and Fabrice Luchini.
