The Beaver

Movie Rating: Melanie Zahar

Mel Gibson plays a depressed family man who develops his own therapy using a hand puppet. Directed by Jodie Foster.

Walter has been depressed for many years. Neither his family - a loving wife and their two boys - nor his work as the head of a toy company have been able to help him with his pain. When his wife finally snaps and throws him out, he clumsily tries to commit suicide. Then he finds a hand puppet in the shape of a beaver, who takes over his identity but without his painful past. But soon his real self starts to come through...

Neither the good cast, headed by Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster, are able to save this rickety comedy-drama. The screenplay is too confusing and badly constructed; the subject matter to vain and incoherent. This will not be Gibson's comeback movie.

Jodie Foster knew how to manage a simple story and make it good.
