Documentary about six young dancers training for world ballet championships.
American journalist and director Bess Kargman's debut goes behind the scenes of ballet - both a performance sport and an art form. During a year, she filmed six young dancers as they trained for the "Youth America Grand Prix", one of the largest and most renowned ballet championships. Her subjects are between 9 and 19 and come from five different continents. Despite their differences, they all have the same goal: the youngest battle for one of the esteemed prizes, the older ones for a scholarship to a school or a contract with a dance company.
The movie has a critical tone, at least at the beginning, taking on subjects like lost childhood, injuries and the high cost of training. It also disproves certain prejudices against the world of ballet. But one odd thing: no one fails, even though the path to becoming a ballet star seems incredibly difficult.
