The last macaw of his kind, shy and domesticated, is taken to Rio to reproduce.

In a small Minnesota town, Blu is a macaw who's been the pet of a little girl all his life. One day he meets Jewel, the last female of their kind and they go off to Rio to save their species from extinction. But nothing goes as planned: Jewell is focused on getting her freedom and looks down on Blu as a domestic pet. But when they're kidnapped by a bird trafficker, the two team up for real. When they do manage to escape, things get even more complicated when it turns out that Blu can't fly...

Blu's character owes a lot to Woody Allen, although he spends more time falling out of the sky at top speed that wondering about the meaning of life. No surprise there, considering this is an animated movie by Carlos Saldanha, the director of the excellent Ice Age. Which is why the gags, the action and the authors' imagination make for a very entertaining film.
