In an isolated part of China, a woman pretends to have seen a UFO, unwittingly releasing the complete and unstoppable Americanization of her village.

On September 11, Kwok Yun, a single, marginalized peasant woman, runs to Chang, the head of her Chinese village, to tell him she's seen a UFO, after which she found and treated a wounded stranger who has now disappeared. A policeman from Beijing is sent to investigate. Meanwhile, under the guise of a new five-year plan, Chang begins the construction of a memorial to attract tourists, comprising a hotel, golf course and a theme park. Some inhabitants, including Kwok Yun, find themselves completely overwhelmed...

What does the future hold for a small village in China (or elsewhere) in a globalized environment? This is the excellent question posed by writer and filmmaker Xiaolu Guo in this piece of political satire, that is very funny and sometime unnerving. With two styles of dazzling beauty, contradictions abound, as the film shows how easily globalization mixes with Chinese communism, as “the individual continues to sacrifice himself for the collective”.
