When Pigs Have Wings
A Palestinian fisherman does everything he can to get rid of a pig he caught in his net.
Jafaar can't earn a living since he no longer has the right to fish more than 4 km off the coast of Gaza, and he asks himself how he's going to pay his debts. One day he catches a Vietnamese pig in his net. His friend advises him to kill the “impurity” as quickly as possible. But Jafaar hates guns and he's heard that Jews trade in pigs. So he gets on his bike, goes to the closest Jewish settlement and, through the fence, tries to sell his pig to Yelena, who raises them. But Yelena is only interested in its semen...
This film by Sylvain Estibal is full of original treasures, such as when Jafaar procures Viagra and then tacks up pictures of female pigs in the hold of his boat where he's hiding his male pig. One realizes that the soldiers, all very young, are overworked, that the risk of terrorist attacks is permanent and that daily life is as difficult for the Palestinians as it is for the Jews. The recruitment of martyrs is chilling, even if it's understood that the resourceful Jafaar won't let himself be convinced. An intelligent and quirky film about the absurdities of war.
