Back from a trip, a woman discovers that a crime has been committed in the hallway of her building.

Louise, back in Le Havre after a business trip to China, finds her neighborhood in an uproar over an atrocious crime committed on the floor below hers. The victim, a young 20-year-old woman, was savagely beaten in the street and finished off in the hallway of the building. Everyone claims not to have seen or heard a thing, and the investigation seems stalled until Pierre, Louise's fiancé, changes his story. He now says he was home and that no one could have overheard the screams that night...

Lucas Belvaux delves into the reasons why so many people would claim not to know what happened on such a night, to the extent of letting someone suffer and then lying about it, so as not to get involved or helping another person and perhaps complicating one's own life. Can society really judge a reaction such as the one shared by 38 people? This slow, beautiful and tortuous film tries to find the answer.
