A Lady in Paris
Frida is old and has trouble dealing with the fact that she is no longer beautiful or attractive to her young former lover.
Frida (Jeanne Moreau) has lost her youth. An Estonian ex-pat in France no longer true to her roots, she is an insatiable flirt and bored to tears by the body that no longer lets her do the crazy things she used to, but which still keeps her wanting more. Frida loved only Stéphane, a former lover who is much younger than she and to whom she still pays as much attention as before – but unfortunately his attraction is gone. To compensate for his disinterest, Stéphane hires the Estonian housekeeper Anne (Laine Mägi), which breaks Frida's heart even more. Her revenge is to treat Anne badly, but her countrywoman's discrete perseverance ends up healing Frida in a way she never expected...
Ilmar Raag offers two portrayals of strong women who are damaged but still dignified, played by Jeanne Moreau and Laine Mägi. The plush Parisian setting amplifies the boredom, the inevitability of the passage of time and faded love, which become heavy loads to overcome when you're trying to keep your head up – never mind the deterioration of the body ahead of the mind, which needs to be strong as you watch yourself get old. A great homage to women, reminiscent of the quote by Serge Gainsbourg: "Ugliness is better than beauty, because it lasts".
