Arbitrage
A hedge fund manager makes a fatal mistake and gets help from an unlikely source. Thriller starring Richard Gere and Susan Sarandon.
Robert Miller (Richard Gere) is a successful hedge fund manager, a charitable man with an impressive wife (Susan Sarandon) and two grown children. But on his 60th birthday it all begins to unravel. Miller tries desperately to sell his company to a bank before a close look at his books reveal wrongdoings, and his affair with French gallery owner Julie (Laetitia Casta) won't stay a secret for long. On the way to a weekend in the country, Miller falls asleep at the wheel and Julie dies. He runs from the scene and gets caught in a web of lies as he tries to keep his life from falling apart.
Nicholas Jarecki's debut is a suspenseful, excellent old-fashioned thriller, with a plot that is not exactly original but well told and with believable characters and without explosions or special effects. Arbitrage works thanks to the excellent performance of Richard Gere, whose public image as a cool, soft Buddhist helps make this awful character a bit more human. Gere is brilliant as the billionaire who is not as untouchable as he thinks.
