Laurence Anyways
Very much in love with his girlfriend, Laurence tells her he wants to become a woman. By Xavier Dolan.
Laurence (Melvil Poupaud) and Fred's (Suzanne Clément) love is freestyle, festive and joyous during the late 80's in Quebec. But Laurence wants to stop lying and cheating those he loves by being that which he knows he has always been: a woman. At first, Frédérique seems to be able to deal with this news, but soon she finds it hard to stand up for him in public. Laurence, meanwhile, has a conundrum: to become himself, he must first lose Frédérique. Years later, they meet again: Laurence has written a book, Frédérique has a baby. Laurence understands he will never completely lose Frédérique, the first and last woman in his life...
Xavier Dolan's third film lasts 2 hours, 40 minutes. The first hour – a series of fascinating shots of a tenderly loving couple – goes by too quickly. After these sumptuous images, the soundtrack offers a rich backdrop, but then unfortunately the last 40 minutes block out the fireworks as the protagonist reveals a tiresome side of his personality.
