Marina Abramovic: The Artist Is Present

Movie Rating: Eduard Ulrich

Moving documentary about Marina Abramovic's performance piece at the MoMA in 2010 and her preparation for it.

Portraying one form of art with another is difficult, and practically impossible in the case of the grandmother of performance art, as Marina Abramovic is called. The physical parameters of duration, sound pressure and dimensionality alone can't be properly represented, not to mention that the moment of interaction is completely unachievable. And yet Abramovic's speciality is exactly this interaction: grabbing the audience and placing them all into the same state of consciousness so that they all have the same experience.

For his first documentary, 35-year-old Texan director Matthew Akers took up this challenge. When Abramovic was invited for a retrospective at MoMA, he was given permission to film her preparation and the three-month exhibition. Akers won the audience award in the Panorama section at the 2012 Berlinale for this film.
