Paradies: Liebe
A European tourist buys herself a lover in Africa. The first in a trilogy by Ulrich Seidl.
In the first part of Ulrich Seidl's trilogy about the divine virtues faith, hope and love, a middle-aged woman from Vienna (Margarethe Tiesel) on vacation in Kenya hopes to find the love that no longer seems to be available in Europe for women of her age. But her hopes and desires remain unfulfilled, because while she may get sex for money from the young men on the beach, if they offer emotions and closeness, they are at best simulated.
Austrian filmmakers are famous for their harsh look at the psyche of their countrymen and women. The most unrelenting and caustic of them is Ulrich Seidl, a former documentary filmmaker, who ruthlessly uncovers human vulgarities and loneliness with an insistent eye that sometimes devolves into voyeurism. Not a thing of beauty, but a film that knows how to provoke and unsettle its audience, making it more than memorable in the end.
