Robot and Frank
An old man is given a robot to help him keep his mind and body fit.
A former car thief, Frank (Frank Langella) lives alone in an isolated house. His memory is fading, so his worried son gives him a humanoid robot, which is programmed to help him exercise and stimulate his memory. At first resistant to this present that makes him feel like a child, to old man soon manages to convince his new companion to help him prepare for a big score. Within the limits of their mutual understanding, one without a soul and the other without scruples, the two throw themselves into the task...
Jack Schreier's movie is a fun version of what robots may help us to do in the future. The game of mental persuasion the old man plays with with his new gadget is finely crafted. Franck makes the most of the faults of a simple IT system that has no idea of right or wrong and is programmed only to accomplish a precise task. A charming comedy with two protagonists - one flesh and blood and one plastic and metal - who interact as a well-oiled machine.
