Rock the Casbah
When her father dies, an actress returns to Tangiers to the family she hasn’t seen in 10 years.
The patriarch (Omar Sharif) is dead and the women of the house come together for three days of mourning in honor of the deceased. Sofia (Morjana Alaoui), a successful actress in New York, returns for the occasion to Tangiers and to her sisters and mother, whom she hasn’t seen in 10 years – when her older sister committed suicide. The emotional reunion will ignite feelings within the family long kept under wraps. Between laughter and tears, the truth hits the bereaved hard and each one finds it easier to talk in the absence of paternal authority. Secrets come to light when the will is read, revealing all kinds of things...
Mainly a chamber piece set behind the wall of a mansion in mourning, this reunion of women opens up a wealth of emotions that are sometimes restrained and often effusive. Although truths and advice are thrown about like china during a bad fight, the backdrop remains affectionate. The father’s ghost appears to observe his now fatherless family, giving the buzzing, effervescent atmosphere a nostalgic air. A sweet reunion underneath the fig tree.
